Our Cookie Policy

Like most websites, this one uses cookies.

What are cookies and how do they work?

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer or mobile device. Your browser sends these cookies back to the website every time you visit the site again, so it can recognise you and can then tailor what you see on the screen. A cookie often includes a randomly generated number which is stored on your device and many cookies are automatically deleted after you finish using the website. They make using websites much smoother and affect lots of the useful features of websites.

Cookies used on the Website

A list of all the cookies used on the Website by category is set out below.

We use some first-party cookies and third-party cookies necessary for the functioning of this site. They are listed below. We deem the continued use of this site as acceptance of these cookies

Third Party

Google Analytics. These cookies are used to collect information about how visitors use our site. We use the information to compile reports and to help us improve the site. The cookies collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, where visitors have come to the site from and the pages they visited.

The Google Analytics cookies are called _utma, _utmb, _umtc and _utmz. They will appear in the list of cookies under thedebtcounsellors.org.uk in your cookie file.

  • __utma tracks whether you have visited the website before. It is set to expire two years after your last visit.
  • __utmb establishes a ‘user session’ and tracks which pages you look at on this visit to the website. It is set to expire 30 minutes after your last visit.
  • __utmc is connected with _utmb and expires when you closed your browser, rather than just visit another website.
  • __utmz tracks whether you have come to the website from a search engine, another website or have typed the web address directly into your browser. It is set to expire six months after it was last set.

PHPSESSID This cookie allows you navigate around the website smoothly and use essential features.  These cookies don’t gather any information about you that could be used for marketing or remembering where you’ve been on the internet.

Zopim. We use Zopim to provide live customer service chat from this website. Zopim requires two cookies. One to store the Zopim Live Chat ID used to identify the device across visits, and also across a single chat session. The second stores the user’s preference to disable Live Chat, and cease using cookies. This is stored across visits.

Social buttons

On many of the pages of the site you will see ‘social buttons’. These enable users to share or bookmark the web pages. There are buttons for services such as: Twitter, Google +1, Facebook ‘Like’, and LinkedIn ‘Share’. In order to implement these buttons, and connect them to the relevant social networks and external sites, there are scripts from domains outside of The Debt Counsellors. You should be aware that these sites are likely to be collecting information about what you are doing all around the internet, including on The Debt Counsellors’s site. So if you click on any of these buttons, these sites will be registering that action and may use that information. In some cases these sites will be registering the fact that you are visiting The Debt Counsellors, and the specific pages you are on, even if you don’t click on the button if you are logged into their services, like Google and Facebook. You should check the respective policies of each of these sites to see how exactly they use your information and to find out how to opt out, or delete, such information.

How do I disable cookies?

If you wish to restrict or block the cookies which are set by our website, or indeed any other website, you can do this through your browser settings. The ‘Help’ function within your browser should tell you how.

Full instructions for all browsers can be found at: www.aboutcookies.org/default.aspx?page=1
